So if anyone remembers from back on my old LJ, I stated last January that one of my goals in 2010 was to read 50 books I've never read before. Well, that didn't quite pan out, but I did read a lot of new books and really expanded my personal library. Throughout the year I kept a record of the new books I had read, and here now is the final list!

New books I read in 2010Collapse )

And a meeeemeCollapse )

Now I need some BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS for 2011! \o/ What have you been reading, and what would you recommend I read? I'm especially big into fantasy, YA and historical fiction, but as you can see I'm trying to expand my horizons so feel free to rec me anything else, especially good nonfiction.

Hurgh all the news stations this morning are full of dire warnings about the BLIZZARD BARRELING DOWN ON US, it's supposed to accumulate 6-12 inches. ;; CHRISTMAS WAS YESTERDAY OK, there's no point to a WHITE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS. Plus I have to go to work on Monday. D8

I hope your Christmas or Saturday was a happy one. ♥ If you're in the mood for some silly light-hearted rp my holiday-themed open rp post is still going on:

HO HO THE MISTLETOE!
OPEN RP POST HERE!

And now the obligatory haulCollapse )

HO HO THE MISTLETOE!
OPEN RP POST HERE!

Idk but if you want to play COME ON OVER. ♥ I'll be here all week.

Anybody interested in an open rp post? The last one I did was here quite a while ago but it was reasonably successful. I've always meant to do one since but just never quite got around to it. But being there are lots of people on my f-list I rarely get to play with any more I would totally like to do more of these!

I'm thinking a holiday-themed post since 'tis the season and all. The idea I have is shamelessly ganked from sirenspull a mistletoe event. Basically, mistletoe's been hung everywhere and YOUR CHARACTERS are imbued with the urge to KISS OTHER CHARACTERS. Maybe not just kiss--maybe they fall in love, get crazy stalker tendencies, get busy in a closet or whatever you feel like! As long as some physical contact is somehow induced. :')

Any interest? Yea/nay/this idea sucks? Can go up in a day or two if people want!

I guess I should finally share the good news, now that it's actually way after the fact:

I GOT MY TIGER PERMIT!!!!!

By which I do indeed mean a new job. :D

I say it's way after the fact because I actually found out two weeks ago, but there was some stringent HR procedures to get through and I was so terrified of jinxing myself that I only told a few people. BUT NOW YOU ALL KNOW. \o/ I am officially (as in training started yesterday) a telesales representative for a certain very large U.S. cell phone provider (the one I've been temping for this long). Whose cell phones I will sell. TELEPHONICALLY. And since I get this question all the time, no it's not a telemarketing position--it's an incoming call center, so if you call up one of those 800 numbers wanting to order a new cell phone, I'm one of the people who pick up! IN SOVIET CELL PHONE PROVIDER, CUSTOMER CALLS YOU.

Possibly my favorite part about this (aside from the salary hike) is my awesome new smartphone I ordered today. 8D

Holidaaaaze. I came up with a wish list (because who doesn't at this time of year) and I'm posting it here because I'm a greedy consumerist. But they're just ideas, and of course nobody's obligated to get me anything, and more in the spirit of giving, I'm still working on sending out HOLIDAY CARDS so it's not too late to request one! Note: If you do want a card please go to THAT POST to leave your address, because a) your address will be screened and b) I'll have all the addresses in one place and I'm an organizational freak.

The wish listCollapse )

Sometimes I make little sense to myself. Case in point: I'm terrified of any spiders bigger than my thumbnail with legs a millimeter thick or more, and will kill them on sight. But this morning when I found a teeny spider with spindly legs in my shower, I picked it up in my hand and transferred it to the bathroom wall so it wouldn't get washed down the drain. Wat?

I'm going down to my aunt's in beautiful Spring Lake NJ after work today and will be staying overnight. Tags will be sporadic/not there and online presence negligible till I get back sometime Saturday night. In the meantime I leave you these awesome videos I've been meaning to link for a while!

THEY ARE 100% GUARANTEED WORTH WATCHING

Let's just say I really, really don't feel good about my chances of getting this particular tiger permit. I screwed up really bad. I had a really promising start, too, which just makes it doubly worse. I just feel so low right now. Ugh ugh ugh.

I've got a thing tomorrow. A Big Thing.

It may be related to tiger permits.*

A lot is riding on this Big Thing. If you have any good luckish thoughts/energy to spare me I would veeeeery much appreciate it. ♥

*I wonder how many people on my f-list will still get that reference.

Lmao just saw a Sora journal name with username iseveryone. My theory for Kingdom Hearts is that some future game will eventually reveal that the entire KH universe is a vivid coma dream of Sora's and all the cast are Sora's Inception-style projections. I also like to say that every KH game can be summed up as "MAIN CHARACTER FINDS OUT HOW HE/SHE RELATES TO SORA".

It's important to remember the good things...

Like MOTHER-EFFIN' TEDDY GETTING IN and the Fang being a supersweetheart, and a full FFXIII cast now (minus our Sazh who idled out), and being surrounded by cool people at that game. Hey otilu we should do an FFXIII cast chat and PLAN OUR CAFE.

Also a good job interview on Monday, and applying for a permanent position at That Cell Phone Company next week.

And books!

New books I've read this year:
Angela's Ashes (Frank McCourt)
The Graveyard Book (Neil Gaiman)
Drawing Down the Moon (Margot Adler)
Book of Shadows (Phyllis Curott)
Witchcraft: A Concise Guide (Isaac Bonewits)
The Spiral Dance (Starhawk)
The Way of Four (Deborah Lipp)
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (Betty Smith)
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Jane Austen and Seth Graham-Smith)
Call Me By Your Name (Andre Aciman)
Kitchen Confidential (Anthony Bourdain)
Cold Mountain (Charles Frazier)
Beatrice and Virgil (Yann Martel)
The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America (Erik Larson)
Water for Elephants (Sara Gruen)
Real Magic (Isaac Bonewits)
Tongue of Serpents (Naomi Novik)
The Wave in the Mind: Talks and Essays on the Writer, the Reader, and the Imagination (Ursula K. Le Guin)
A Walk in the Woods (Bill Bryson)
Coraline (Neil Gaiman)
Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom: A Book of Tarot (Rachel Pollack)
Freedom (Jonathan Franzen)

Reading now: Smoke and Mirrors (Neil Gaiman) and Zoo Story: Life in the Garden of Captives (Thomas French)
Up next: An Encyclopedia of Fairies (Katherine Briggs)

I don't want to keep letting other people drive me out of games I love, even if I can hardly stand to be around them. But why can't I have just ONE game where I'm at peace? Is that too much to ask for?
